Doggie Dental Defense
Be proactive when it comes to your dog’s dental hygiene. Keep your dog’s teeth clean to prevent decay and promote a healthy dog. There are many ways to achieve this. If you have a playful dog, provide many toys that are hard or chewy. The toys will clean the teeth and provide mental engagement. There are even some toys that are created to clean teeth. All you do is add a dab of peanut butter and let the toy do the rest.

If your dog doesn’t find toys engaging, provide dental chews. There are all kinds so, try out several. Provide various ones that target different teeth. Another way you can promote a healthy mouth is the dog food you choose. If you notice plaque build up in your dog’s mouth and toys or chews aren’t working, try switching to dog food with large chunks that the dog has to chew on more to break down and swallow. Some vets even proscribe food that is designed to clean the teeth.

You can also brush your dog’s teeth. I have not had success with this technique and my ‘ three dogs. Be gentle if you try it. Be sure to buy doggie toothpaste and toothbrush. Doggie toothbrushes are soft and should not hurt their gums. Do not use human toothpaste. It contains fluoride. Dog’s do not understand to spit the toothpaste out. They will swallow the toothpaste, and it will cause them to have an upset stomach.
Be aware of the plaque build-up in your dog’s mouth. Plaque can cause significant problems. It is best to maintain healthy teeth to have a healthy dog. It also is helpful in avoiding big charges at the vet’s office.
