Making a Tug of War Toy

Share

Dog toys can often feel like a waste of money. You buy a nice toy for ten dollars and in a day or two, sometimes just hours it is completely destroyed. But toys are necessary, they help our pets engage their brains, expend energy, and fight boredom. So for my three crazy dogs I try to cut down costs on toys and make my own. Here is a simple tutorial to make a tug-of-war toy for your pup(s).

Let’s Jump to it!

Gather these items:

  • Old t-shirt
  • Scissors (and if available a Fabric cutting set)
  • Yard stick

First cut from the bottom of your t-shirt to the under pits and then up the seem on the bottom of the sleeve.

Then you are going to cut all on the seem of the sleeve attaching it to the back of your t-shirt on both sides. Also cut along the neck seem. You can cut up the front of the t-shirt for wash cloths or use the front like the back if it doesn’t have decals.

Once you have cut off the front of the shirt you should have something that looks like this. Now your ready to begin cutting strips to braid.

This is what your fabric should end up looking like. You can use scissors or you can cut with your fabric cutting set if you have one. I ended up with nine two inch strips. I cut from the neck towards the bottom seam and left an inch and a half not cut so the strips are still attached to one another. This will make braiding easier.

For my toy I decided to braid three little braids and then braid those together. The idea was to make it harder to rip up. But you could also just braid all the strips in one big braid.

Here are my three little braids.

Now they are all braided together.

Now tying it off is very important. I started my taking one strip from two different mini braids and tying them in a knot. Then repeated until all nine strands were in a knot. Then double knotted them all. This gives it a crazy look on the end but is fun for the dogs to grab.

Now all you have to do is repeat the last step on the other end after cutting the strips apart. Yippee! You have a easy dog tug-of-war toy!
