Potty Training Your Puppy

Share

Potty training your puppy is going to be your priority when you bring him/her home. Puppies can generally hold their bladder for one hour for each month old they are until they are eight months old (A dog shouldn’t be expected to hold his bladder for longer than eight hours). So, if your puppy is three months old when you bring him home, he should be able to hold his bladder for three hours. If you are not playing with your puppy or snuggling with him, it will be best for you to have him in his crate. Puppies are less likely to soil their dens. This will also acclimate him to his crate from a young age. But, do not leave puppies in their crates for longer than three hours. If you need to leave for longer than that time, have someone else take him on his potty break and give him time to play.

Get your puppy into a schedule for mealtime. This will help you greatly because what goes into a puppy on schedule comes out on schedule. Always praise your puppy when he or she eliminates in the proper place. Never punish. A puppy will not understand punishment. When he has an accident, clean it up thoroughly. Puppies eliminate where they smell urine and feces. If you do not get all the smell removed, they will likely have another accident there. Puppy potty training takes lots of time and patience.
