Preparing Your Home for Your New Puppy

Begin preparing your house before you find your puppy. Decide where the dog is going to stay, inside or outside. A fence for them is necessary whether it is inside or outside. The fence needs to be installed well so you are confident that your puppy will not be able to escape while outside. It also needs to be big enough that they will not want to escape. Fence off any bodies of water so that your dog needs you to allow him to swim. Some dogs like to swim, but it can be dangerous to let it swim when it is by themself. Remove any sharp items, fertilizers, and chemicals from the yard. These can injure a puppy. Puppies love to chew, and electrical wires are deadly to them. Make sure they cannot get their tiny teeth on any wires.
If your puppy is going to live outside you will need to provide a small dog house for it so it can have a dry place to lie. It doesn’t need to be grand. It needs to have enough room for them to turn around in. The home should be waterproof and keep your puppy off the ground in the winter. Keep in mind that as your puppy grows it will need more space. Think ahead to how big they will grow and buy or build a house to that size. Also, fill the house with a nice warm bed and consider hanging a blanket over the door to keep off the draft.
If he is going to stay inside he will need a place to call his own as well. It is a good idea to have a crate for him with a nice soft bed and toys. Try to choose a spot that will not change. If you have to change the location, that would be ok. But that can confuse your puppy. Take some time to think through how your home functions and where would be a quiet place for the crate to go. When your puppy comes home he will want to have somewhere to go to be alone sometimes, whether to nap or play by himself. When your puppy is either in his crate or dog house you should leave him alone. This is how he learns that when he is there he won’t be disturbed. This will help him become comfortable in your home.
